Saint Peter's Church

The church sits at the heart of Hartlepool's old town, a sturdy medieval structure that's easy to walk past if you're not paying attention. Step inside though and you're back in time - proper old stonework, that particular smell of centuries-old stone and wood, and enough light streaming through the windows to actually make out what you're looking at without squinting.

It's the kind of place history buffs will genuinely enjoy spending twenty minutes in, reading the wall plaques and getting a feel for how Hartlepool evolved. Families won't find it a thrilling stop unless the kids are into spotting gargoyles or rubbing brass, but it works perfectly as a breather between the seafront attractions or on a rainy afternoon. The churchyard itself is worth a wander if the weather's decent.

There's no entry fee as far as anyone can tell, though opening hours vary depending on services and volunteers. Ring ahead or check the noticeboard if you're making a special trip. Allow thirty minutes maximum unless you're really into ecclesiastical architecture.

If you're staying at Donnewell Farm Caravan and Motorhome Club CL just outside town, Saint Peter's is easily done as part of a morning wandering Hartlepool's historic quarter. It's free, it's local, and it adds a bit of substance to what's otherwise a seaside tourist visit. Not spectacular, but solid.
