Saint Peter and Saint Thomas a Beckett, Stambourne

The church sits quietly at the heart of Stambourne village, a flint and stone building that's been around since the 12th century. You'll spot it easily enough - the tower's solid, reassuring, built when people took their construction seriously. Inside, there's proper medieval atmosphere: wooden roof beams that creak slightly, stone pillars, and windows that have seen rather a lot of history pass beneath them.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick visit. The chancel has some genuinely fine stonework, and if you're into that sort of thing - brass rubbings, old tombs, the bones of village life carved in stone - you could spend a good hour poking about. The acoustics are lovely too, which explains why they still hold services here.

History types will get more from it than casual visitors. Kids might find it interesting for five minutes, then want to leg it off to the churchyard to chase grass snakes. Fair enough.

It's a few miles east of Braintree, which means it slots nicely into a wider ramble around Essex if you're staying at Hill Farm campsite nearby. The village itself is genuinely quiet - the sort of place where you can actually hear birds - so it works well as a break from whatever else you've got planned. No admission charge, as is standard for parish churches. Pop in when it's open, have a look around, move on. Low-key, proper English, and free.
