Saint Michael

The church sits on high ground overlooking Chepstow, and it's one of those places where you actually understand why medieval folk bothered building stone structures in the first place - the view from the churchyard is genuinely worth the walk up. Saint Michael's itself is a proper working parish church, not some roped-off museum piece, which means you might catch a service or find it closed for a wedding, but that's part of its charm.

Inside, it's got that solid Norman feel - thick stone walls, decent stained glass, and the kind of quiet that makes you naturally drop your voice. The tower dominates Chepstow's skyline, and locals will point it out from miles away. It's the sort of place history buffs will spend twenty minutes studying the gravestones and architectural details, but families with restless kids might manage ten.

Free to look around, though opening hours aren't always predictable - phone ahead or check during your visit to Chepstow proper. Allow thirty minutes to take it in properly, longer if you're the type to sit in the churchyard for a bit. The surrounding area doesn't offer much else in terms of attractions, but it slots nicely into a wider Monmouthshire itinerary if you're based at Penhein Glamping nearby. The walk up from town clears the head after town-centre pottering.
