Saint Mary's

The church dominates Lutterworth's high street, its tower visible for miles across the Leicestershire flatlands. Saint Mary's is a proper medieval structure, all soaring stone and pointed arches, the kind of place where you can almost feel the centuries pressing down on the pews.

Inside, the building reveals itself slowly to your eyes. Stained glass catches whatever light manages to push through the English clouds, and the nave stretches back far enough that you realise the congregation here was once substantial. There's genuine medieval work alongside Victorian restoration - you'll spot the joins if you look carefully. The chancel and surviving monuments tell the story of local families who mattered once, now mostly forgotten except by the church records.

It's not a spectacle like Coventry Cathedral, but that's rather the point. You'll get more from this place if you're genuinely interested in parish church architecture or local history than if you're ticking off tourist boxes. Allow twenty to thirty minutes to look properly, longer if you're into the finer details of medieval stonework.

It won't dominate your holiday itinerary, but it's worth the detour if you're passing through Lutterworth anyway, and it's free to step inside.
