Saint Mary's Castle Church

The church sits right in the heart of Stafford, a solid Victorian structure that doesn't immediately grab you from the street. Inside, though, it's quite different - proper soaring spaces and genuine craftsmanship that actually rewards a slow wander. The stained glass isn't flashy but it's genuinely well done, catching light in unexpected ways depending on the time of day.

This is genuinely useful if you're into church architecture or if you've got a bit of spiritual interest, rather than something you'd drag reluctant teenagers round. History buffs might appreciate the Victorian-era details and the sense of what mattered to mid-nineteenth-century Stafford. An hour is plenty of time, maybe ninety minutes if you're really reading every inscription.

It's free to walk in, though opening hours can be a bit variable depending on services - worth ringing ahead or checking their notice board. If you're staying at High Onn Holiday Park just outside town, it's an easy trip in for a morning or afternoon when you fancy something less outdoor-focused. Combines well with a proper look round Stafford's town centre itself, which has decent shops and the odd decent cafe for a break afterwards. Not a major draw on its own, but if you're in the area anyway and have a couple of hours to fill, it's worth the detour.
