Saint Llwchaiarn's Church

The small stone church sits quietly in the Powys countryside, easy to miss if you're not actively looking. Saint Llwchaiarn's is genuinely old - we're talking medieval foundations here - and it's the sort of place that rewards a detour if you're into church architecture or local history.

What you get is a proper working parish church with that particular atmosphere only centuries-old buildings manage. The stonework tells its own story, and inside there's enough detail to keep you occupied for twenty minutes or so. It's not a major tourist draw, which means you'll likely have the place to yourself - no crowds, no noise, just you and some very solid masonry.

Walkers based at nearby Smithy Park will find this worth adding to a ramble through the Mid Wales landscape. The surrounding countryside is quietly gorgeous, all rolling fields and tree-lined paths. Families with older kids interested in history will get something from it, though younger children might find it a bit slow. There's no tea shop or facilities immediately on site, so come prepared.

Free to visit as far as I can tell, though it's worth checking locally beforehand. Twenty minutes maximum for a proper look around, or longer if you're the type who reads every inscription. Early morning or late afternoon light through those old windows is when it really shows its age properly.
