Saint James (Grimsby Minster)

The tower of Saint James commands Grimsby's skyline like a medieval punctuation mark, and once you're inside, it's clear why locals are still talking about it centuries on. This is the Minster proper - all soaring perpendicular Gothic, with a 288-foot spire that took medieval builders the better part of forever to get right. The interior hits you with that particular silence churches do: high vaults, intricate woodcarving, and enough light streaming through the windows to make you actually understand why people bothered with all this stone in the first place.

Historians and architecture types will spend proper time here, tracing the building phases from the 14th century onwards. But families won't feel out of place either - the sheer scale keeps kids craning their necks for a good while. It's the sort of building that reminds you Grimsby was once genuinely prosperous, before the fishing industry did what it did.

Admission is free, and you'll need maybe 30-45 minutes to take it in without rushing. Best visited midweek if you're after some quiet. If you're based at Haven Cleethorpes Beach Holiday Park just down the road, it's barely 20 minutes away and works perfectly as a break from the seafront - proper contrast to a beach holiday. The town centre's a short walk once you're done, though honestly the church itself is the real draw here.
