Saint Colman's

Saint Colman's is a proper working parish church in Hillsborough, sitting quietly on the high street with that confident, slightly austere look of Church of Ireland buildings from the 18th century. The interior is stripped back - whitewashed walls, wooden pews, tall windows letting light flood across the nave - which gives it an almost meditative feel after you've been walking around the village.

It's the sort of place history types will spend time with, reading the memorial plaques and getting a sense of how the local gentry worshipped. The church sits right in Hillsborough proper, so you can't miss it, and there's no faffing about with admission fees or opening hours to plan around - just push the door and have a look.

Families won't find much to occupy kids for long, if I'm honest. Twenty minutes maximum unless someone's genuinely interested in church architecture. But if you're staying at Lakeside View Caravan Park just up the road, and you fancy a proper wander through Hillsborough village - which is worth an afternoon - this is the sort of stop that makes sense. Pairs well with the historic courthouse and the market square nearby.

Go midweek if you want it quiet. The light's best in late morning when it floods through those tall windows. Don't expect signage or a gift shop. It's a working church, not a visitor attraction dressed up as one.
