Saint Andrews

The stone bulk of Saint Andrews rises above the market town of Kettering like a proper statement of medieval ambition. This 14th-century parish church is worth a detour if you're into ecclesiastical architecture - the chancel and nave have decent Decorated Gothic work, and the interior's far less cluttered than you'd expect. You'll spend a good twenty minutes looking at the stonework, the windows, and wondering how many centuries of Kettering residents have sat in these pews.

It's the sort of place that appeals to architecture enthusiasts and anyone with a genuine interest in how ordinary English towns expressed themselves through stone and craft. The churchyard itself is pleasant enough for a wander, though it won't thrill kids for more than ten minutes. Kettering's compact enough that you can combine a visit with a proper look round the town centre - shops, cafes, the lot.

If you're staying at Northfield Farm or Lakeview Caravan Park nearby, Saint Andrews makes for an easy morning out before heading into the surrounding countryside. Neither park is far away, so it's genuinely convenient rather than a hassle. The church does tend to keep fairly standard opening hours, but do ring ahead - rural churches can be temperamental about public access. Free to enter, no charge for the churchyard. Realistically, build it into a broader Kettering morning rather than as a standalone destination.
