Saint Andrew’s Church Girton

The church sits on a gentle rise in Girton village, just a couple of miles north of Cambridge's sprawl. What catches you first isn't the building itself but the churchyard - properly atmospheric, with old graves tilted at angles that suggest centuries of settling and shifting beneath your feet. Saint Andrew's is a medieval parish church, the sort of place that locals have worshipped in for seven hundred years, though it's been rebuilt and fiddled with enough times that you'll spot Norman bits alongside Victorian repairs.

Inside, it's calm. The nave has that particular smell of old stone and wood polish that only centuries can create. There's a decent font, some decent glass, and the usual accumulated quirks of a working church - memorial plaques to long-dead Cambridge academics, a notice board with parish news, the sort of thing that makes you realise this isn't a museum piece but an actual community space.

Walkers will appreciate this more than casual tourists. It's the kind of church that rewards a twenty-minute poke around, not a destination in itself. Family groups doing a Cambridge loop walk might call in en route. History enthusiasts will recognise the medieval bones, though you won't find museum-quality detail here.

The two nearby vegan glamping and camping spots - Hempsall Farm and Fen End Farm - make decent bases for exploring the wider area. From either, Saint Andrew's is an easy leg of a country ramble through the Cambridgeshire flats. Go on a clear day when light pours through the windows. Avoid Sundays unless you're after the full worship experience.
