Saint Agnes Catholic Church

The squat Victorian church sitting just inland from Pevensey feels like it's been there longer than it actually has. Built in the 1870s, Saint Agnes has that solid, no-nonsense charm of Sussex brick that weathers to a sort of burnt orange over the decades. It's a working parish church, so you'll need to check times before turning up - not the sort of place you can just wander into mid-afternoon.

Inside, it's all proper Victorian restraint: high ceilings, decent stained glass, and the kind of quiet that actually means something. The real appeal here is contextual rather than spectacular. If you're staying at Pevensey Bay Holiday Park just down the road, it's worth a ten-minute walk to get a sense of what the community actually looks like beyond the caravan pitches. History buffs should know Pevensey itself - with its castle ruins and Norman earthworks - is the actual draw; the church is more of a supporting act.

It won't occupy you for more than twenty minutes unless you're genuinely interested in Victorian ecclesiastical architecture. Families with restless kids should probably skip it. But if you're the sort who likes to see where locals actually gather on a Sunday, and you're already in the area, Saint Agnes is a proper little window into rural Sussex life.
