Sager's Down

A modest chalk hill rising above the Hampshire countryside between Fareham and the Solent, Sager's Down offers straightforward walking with decent views across the surrounding farmland. It's not going to take your breath away - there's no dramatic summit building or sweeping panorama - but it's a proper little workout for the legs and a legitimate reason to get out of the caravan for an afternoon.

The walk itself is the main attraction here. You're looking at roughly an hour's round trip depending on fitness, with views that open up gradually as you climb. On a clear day you can pick out the Solent and the Isle of Wight from the top, which makes the effort worthwhile. The paths are well-trodden and manageable in most weather, though it gets muddy in winter like everywhere else in the south.

Walkers will get the most from this - families with younger kids might find it a bit of a slog for limited reward, and history buffs won't find much to sink their teeth into. It's the sort of place you'd combine with a visit to Rookesbury Park or one of the other caravan sites dotted within three or four miles, perhaps tackling it as a mid-week leg-stretch rather than a destination in itself.

Free to visit, naturally. Bring sturdy shoes and patience with the ascent - it's worth doing, but don't expect views that'll stay with you for weeks.
