Sacriston Heugh

There's not much left standing at Sacriston Heugh, but that's rather the point. This Roman fort sits just outside Durham, commanding views across what would have been one of the empire's northern frontier routes, and you get a genuine sense of strategic importance even when all that remains is earthwork and scattered stone.

Walking the site, you're tracing the outline of defences that once held perhaps 500 soldiers - a proper garrison keeping watch over the Derwent Valley. The ditches are still visible, dipping away from what's now open grassland. If you've visited other Roman forts and found yourself underwhelmed by the ruins, this one rewards a bit of imagination. The location itself tells you everything about why the Romans bothered to build here at all.

It's the sort of place that will grip anyone into Roman Britain or military archaeology, but families with young children might find it underwhelming - there's nothing tactile, no interpretation panels, just landscape and the weight of history. You'll spend maybe 40 minutes here if you're thorough, less if you're just passing through.

Free to visit, no facilities on site. Head into Durham itself for proper museums if you want context first. It slots well into a broader walk through County Durham's Roman past, and if you're based at Derecroft Glamping nearby, it's an easy afternoon detour that won't eat into your whole day.
