Ryer's Down

Standing at 193 metres, this grassy summit on the Gower Peninsula delivers proper views across the Bristol Channel without the crowds that flock to Rhossili Down. I've climbed it twice now, and both times had the place virtually to myself.

The walk up from Llanmadoc takes about 45 minutes through pleasant farmland, though the final approach gets a bit boggy after rain. Once up top, you'll spot Caldey Island on clear days and get a decent perspective on the sweeping curve of Whiteford Sands below. It's not spectacular - no dramatic cliff edges or ancient monuments - but sometimes that's exactly what you want.

Families with older children who fancy a proper walk will find it manageable, though toddlers might struggle with the terrain. The sheep don't seem bothered by visitors, which is more than can be said for some Gower peaks. Best tackled as part of a longer coastal walk rather than a destination in itself.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Hillend or Broughton Farm, it makes a decent morning stretch-the-legs expedition before hitting the beaches. Just don't expect to be wowed - this is gentle Gower countryside at its most understated.
