Rye Baptist Church

The moment you walk into Rye Baptist Church, you're confronted with the sort of honest, unadorned space that makes you realise how much Victorian churches actually fussed. This isn't Westminster Abbey. It's a working Baptist chapel on Church Square in Rye, and it speaks to something far more genuine about English religious life - the dissenting tradition, the plain-speaking Nonconformists who built meeting houses rather than grand cathedrals.

Inside, the proportions are generous but unpretentious. High ceilings, clear glass windows letting proper daylight flood in, wooden galleries running around three sides. No excessive decoration, no guilt-inducing iconography. You get the impression people came here to listen and think, not to be impressed.

Rye itself is the sort of place where church history is woven into everything - medieval town, pilgrim routes, all of it - and the Baptist tradition here tells a different story to the grand Anglican parish churches you'll find elsewhere in Sussex. Worth an hour's wander if you're already in Rye exploring the cobbled streets.

Admission appears to be free, though opening times aren't guaranteed outside services. If you're staying at Rye Harbour Holiday Park just down the road, or Winchelsea Sands slightly further out, it's a perfectly reasonable morning excursion before lunch. Not a spectacle, but genuine. That counts for something.
