Ruthven Castle

The ruins of Ruthven Castle sit on a low mound outside Blairgowrie, looking out over the River Ericht. It's not much to look at from a distance - just crumbling stone walls and earthworks - but get closer and you'll spot the remains of what was once a proper medieval fortress, likely built in the 13th century. The Cummings family held it for years, and it's been fought over more than once during Scotland's turbulent history.

There's not a visitor centre or tea room here. You rock up, walk round the perimeter, and piece together what you're seeing from whatever signage is actually still standing. That's part of the charm, frankly - no crowds, no gift shop, just you and some old stones. The walk takes twenty minutes, maybe less, so don't plan a half-day around it. But if you're basing yourself at Five Roads or Nethercraig - both cracking parks a few miles away - it's worth the short drive to understand what the locals were defending.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this. Kids under ten might find it a bit dull; older ones who like castle exploring could spend time clambering about. Come in dry weather - the mound can be boggy. Admission is free and there are no set opening hours, though sensible daylight hours apply. It's the sort of place that works best as part of a broader Highland tour rather than a destination in itself.
