Rushey Inn Wood

The woodland around Rushey Inn, just outside Retford, gives you proper ancient forest without the tourist crowds. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - old oaks, decent walking paths, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Nottinghamshire in the first place.

You're walking through mixed woodland here, nothing dramatically steep or demanding. The paths are well-trodden enough to follow, but overgrown enough to feel like actual exploration rather than a guided loop. Good for families with older kids who won't complain after twenty minutes, and proper walkers who want something gentler than a full moorland hike. The light filters through the canopy in that golden way that makes everything look like a landscape painting, particularly in autumn.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared - decent shoes essential, and a map's sensible if you're not confident navigating by instinct. Free to wander, though it's the sort of place that rewards an hour minimum. Two hours if you're the type who stops to look at trees properly.

It slots nicely into a park-based holiday around Retford. Hallcroft Fishery and Holiday Park sits just 2.5 miles away, as does Little Oak Camping - either would make a solid base for exploring this corner of Nottinghamshire. You could combine it with other woodland walks in the area without doubling back. The real win here is that it doesn't feel like you've travelled hours to stand in a gift shop queue.
