Rushden Lakes Nature Walk

The lakes at Rushden are proper lovely if you're after a straightforward walk through water meadows and wetland without the fuss of a formal visitor centre. A couple of miles of flat, well-maintained paths wind round the water, giving you decent views across the lakes themselves - you'll spot mallards, coots, and if you're lucky, herons working the shallows. It's the sort of place where an hour feels about right, unless you're keen on bird spotting, in which case you could comfortably spend two or three.

Families with young walkers won't struggle here. The terrain is easy, there are benches dotted around, and children tend to enjoy the water. Don't expect dramatic landscapes or rare birds - this is honest East Midlands countryside, not some nature reserve with guided tours and binocular-wielding enthusiasts. That said, it's free and accessible, which counts for something when you're based at Grendon Lakes just five miles away and need to stretch your legs without driving far.

Timing-wise, early morning is quieter and the light's better if you've got a camera. Summer brings the most birdlife, though it can get muggy around the water. Go in late afternoon in spring or autumn and you'll have the place mostly to yourself.

It doesn't demand a full morning like a proper country estate would, but that's the point - it's a pleasant amble from Northampton way, not a destination in itself. Worth combining with other bits of the area rather than banking a day on it alone.
