Rue des Fontenelles

A narrow street in Exeter's city centre that actually rewards a proper look around. Rue des Fontenelles runs through some of the oldest parts of town, with Georgian and Victorian frontages that tell the story of how the city rebuilt itself after the war damage. It's the sort of place you'd walk past on your way to the cathedral and miss entirely, which would be a shame.

The street itself is quiet compared to the main shopping drag, which means you can actually stand still and take in the architecture without being knocked about by crowds. There are independent shops dotted along it - nothing groundbreaking, but proper local businesses rather than chain stores. A few cafes sit tucked away too, though they're nothing to plan a trip around.

Worth fifteen minutes of your time if you're already in Exeter's centre exploring the cathedral or wandering the quayside. History enthusiasts will get more from it than families with restless kids, who'll probably find it a bit dull after ten minutes. It's free to wander and there's no official visiting time - just turn up whenever suits.

If you're based at Barley Meadow Touring Park, which sits at a solid 5.0 rating about five miles out, a trip into Exeter itself is a half-hour drive. Woodland Springs is slightly closer at 3.5 miles. Both parks make good bases for exploring the city centre, and this street is a decent addition to a morning walk around the historic bits before heading back to the park for lunch.
