Rubislaw Quarry

The granite pit at Rubislaw might not look much from the road - just a massive hole in the ground with sheer rock faces and water pooled at the bottom. But that's rather the point. This is one of Europe's deepest quarries, and it's been gouging out Aberdeen's famous grey granite since 1741. The scale hits you when you walk to the edge and peer down at the turquoise water, about 350 feet below the rim. Properly vertiginous.

It's not a visitor attraction in the traditional sense - there's no café, no visitor centre, no marked trails. You're essentially looking at an industrial site that's been worked out and abandoned. The appeal is geological and oddly photogenic, especially in afternoon light when the granite walls turn salmon-pink. Walkers and geology enthusiasts get the most from it. Kids might find the sheer drop interesting for five minutes before asking if there's a gift shop.

Free to visit, accessible from Braeside on Aberdeen's outskirts. Allow 20 minutes unless you're seriously into rocks or want to photograph it properly. Spring and autumn tend to be best - summer brings crowds of Instagram hunters, and winter can be waterlogged and bleak.
