RSPB Ynys-hir

The RSPB reserve at Ynys-hir is a proper working wetland - not some manicured visitor attraction, but an actual place where birds come to live and breed. You're walking around lakes and reedbeds three miles south of Machynlleth, binoculars in hand, trying to spot lapwing or curlew while the wind cuts across from Cardigan Bay.

It's free to wander the trails, which is the main draw. The reserve operates on trust rather than turnstiles - you'll find parking and a basic visitor shelter, then you're left to it. Two or three hours is realistic if you're keen on birds; less if you're just after a pleasant walk. Spring and autumn bring the most activity, when migrating species pass through. Winter can be atmospheric but bleak.

Walkers will appreciate the network of paths through varying habitats. If you've got binoculars and a field guide, you'll get more out of it. Children aged eight upwards tend to stay engaged; younger kids might lose interest unless a heron or osprey shows up. The landscape is very Welsh - open, windswept, not dramatic but genuinely peaceful.

Stay at Gwerniago Campsite just three miles away and you've got a solid base for exploring this part of Ceredigion. The nearby Cambrian Coast Holiday Park (5.2 miles) is well-rated if you prefer caravan facilities. Ynys-hir fits nicely into a wider walking holiday - combine it with Machynlleth's market and nearby Snowdonia drives rather than expecting it to anchor a week on its own.
