RSPB The Lodge

The RSPB's headquarters sits just outside Sandy in Cambridgeshire, and it's far more interesting than you'd expect from what sounds like a corporate office visit. The 100 acres of woodland and gardens are genuinely lovely to walk through, with proper trails that take you past working bird feeders, ponds, and hides where you might spot great spotted woodpeckers or nuthatches depending on the season.

It's the kind of place where birdwatchers will spend hours with binoculars, but families with younger kids might find an hour or so enough - though there's a visitor centre with displays and a café that makes it easy to spin out a half-day trip. The admission is free, which is brilliant value given the grounds are well-maintained and there are usually events running through the year.

The real strength here is how close it is to Cambridgeshire Lakes, just down the road. You could comfortably do both in a day - the lakes for a swim or general park atmosphere, then The Lodge for a quieter woodland walk and some serious birdwatching. Winter's best for watching migrating species, but spring and autumn migrations are pretty decent too.

Honestly, it's a bit off the beaten track compared to grander Cambridgeshire attractions, which means it rarely feels crowded. If you're into nature and wildlife rather than stately homes, this is well worth the detour from Sandy.
