RSPB Stoborough Heath

The heath spreads out in front of you like something from another century - gorse and heather rolling across the Dorset landscape with barely a building in sight. RSPB Stoborough Heath, just outside Wareham, is a proper working nature reserve, not a polished visitor attraction with a gift shop. You're here for birds, and more specifically, the rare and specialised ones that need this exact habitat to survive.

Walking the trails, you'll spot nightjars if you time it right (summer evenings are best), along with woodlarks, Dartford warblers, and if you're lucky, the odd hobby hunting overhead. The reserve isn't enormous - you can cover it in a couple of hours - but it demands patience and decent binoculars. Birdwatchers will find this absolutely absorbing; families with young kids might struggle unless they've got genuine enthusiasm for bird spotting rather than expecting somewhere to run about.

The landscape itself has real character. It's lowland heathland, which means it looks wild and slightly windswept even when the weather's reasonable. Spring brings the whole place alive with migrant birds. Autumn can be equally rewarding. Winter's quieter but atmospheric.

It's free to wander, though the RSPB would appreciate a donation. There's no café or facilities to speak of - bring water and sensible shoes because the ground's uneven. Based at either Primrose Fields or Longthorns Farm, you've got excellent camping bases for exploring this corner of Dorset. Worth combining with a walk round nearby heaths if you're serious about the landscape.
