RSPB Ouse Washes

The Ouse Washes near Ely are one of those rare places where you actually spot the birds you've come to see. This is a working wetland - a deliberately flooded stretch of the Ouse Valley that's been managed for wildlife since the 1960s - and it genuinely delivers on the birdwatching promise.

You're looking at open water, reedbeds, and rough grassland spread across a substantial area. In winter the place heaves with wildfowl: thousands of wigeon, pintail, and teal. Spring brings warblers. Summer's quieter but you'll still catch reed warblers and the occasional bittern if you're patient. The walks are straightforward - mostly flat paths along the water's edge - so families with young kids won't struggle, though it's not a "fun park" experience. Expect proper muddy wellies and a pair of binoculars.

Getting there matters. Ely is the nearest town, about 4 miles away, but you'll need a car to reach the reserve itself. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're serious about spotting something; a quick 45-minute walk gets you the gist but misses the point. Check tide times and water levels before you go - they affect what birds turn up.
