RSPB Ouse Fen Reserve

The Ouse Fen Reserve is a working wetland east of Huntingdon where you'll actually see birds rather than just hope you might. Run by the RSPB, it's a proper flat-land birdwatching site with viewing platforms positioned to catch everything from common redshanks to the odd rarer visitor. You're not walking around a manicured garden here - it's genuine fenland habitat, which means muddy paths, reedy margins, and the constant chatter of wildfowl.

Birdwatchers will get the most from it, obviously. But don't write it off if you're just a casual nature type - the open vistas are genuinely nice, and there's something quite meditative about standing on a platform watching the light change across the water. Spring and autumn migrations are when things get properly busy, both with birds and with twitchers armed with telescopes.

It's free to wander round, though facilities are minimal - bring your own binoculars and expect no cafe. You'll want two hours minimum to make it worthwhile, longer if you're serious about the birdwatching. The reserve works well as a half-day stop if you're basing yourself at any of the nearby parks - Long Island Lake and Roseberry Tourist Park are barely a mile away, making this an easy morning outing before heading somewhere else. Cuckoo Fen Campsite is also close by if you want somewhere quieter to stay.
