RSPB Langford Lowfields

The wetlands around Langford Lowfields, just outside Newark, are genuinely worth a morning's wandering if you've got binoculars and patience. This RSPB reserve is flat, marshy terrain where you'll spot lapwings, redshanks, and if you're lucky, the odd bittern booming across the water in spring. The walking is easy - no hills, just the occasional squelch underfoot - but the bird activity depends entirely on the season. Winter brings wildfowl in numbers; summer's quieter but the breeding birds are active.

It's a haven for serious twitchers and casual bird-watchers alike, though families with young kids might find it a touch slow unless they're genuinely into spotting things. You'll need to allow at least two hours to do it justice, longer if you're documenting sightings. Bring decent optics and a field guide.

The reserve sits well within a Nottinghamshire holiday park break. Wigwam Holidays Orchard Stables is barely a mile away, making it a straightforward morning jaunt from your accommodation. The Four Seasons Country Park is further south but still accessible. Check the RSPB website before you go - access conditions and the best viewing times vary with water levels and breeding seasons. Admission is typically free, as with most RSPB reserves, though a donation goes towards habitat management.
