The River Tywi cuts through a steep-sided valley here, and the RSPB has turned it into a proper haven for birdwatchers. The reserve sits above Machynlleth, so it's easily reached if you're based in town, though the final approach involves a decent walk through farmland.

This is absolutely the spot for serious birders. Red kites, buzzards, pied flycatchers in summer - the list goes on. The woodland is thick enough that you'll need patience and decent binoculars to see everything, but the river views alone make it worth the trip. There are trails through the reserve, though they're not what you'd call well-marked, so bring a map or local knowledge.

Families with restless kids might find it a bit slow. There's no cafe, no visitor centre, just trees and birds and the sound of water. You're looking at a couple of hours if you're serious about it, maybe an hour if you're just passing through.
