RSPB Dunnet Head

The northernmost point of the Scottish mainland feels properly remote. Dunnet Head juts out into the Pentland Firth with nothing but cliff edge and the North Sea beyond - it's the sort of place where you understand why people describe the Highlands as wild.

You're here for the birds, really. This RSPB reserve is seabird central: razorbills, guillemots, fulmars and the occasional sea eagle if you're lucky. Spring and summer are peak season when the cliffs are absolutely heaving with nesting birds. Binoculars are essential, and patience helps. The viewing platform gives decent sight lines across the cliffs without scrambling about.

Walking here isn't demanding - the clifftop path is straightforward enough, though the wind can be fierce and the weather changes in minutes. Allow an hour minimum if you're just doing the main viewpoint, longer if you want to explore properly. There's a small car park right at the top, which saves any trekking about.

It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though autumn and winter are bleak enough that you'll mostly have the place to yourself. Thurso is the nearest town, only 13 miles south, making this an easy morning outing if you're camping at Little Croft Highlands nearby.

Honestly, if you're into birdwatching or dramatic coastline, it's worth the detour. If you're expecting dramatic rock formations or a visitor centre with amenities, you'll be disappointed. This is pure, unvarnished Highland nature.
