Roydon Fen Nature Reserve

The boardwalk at Roydon Fen stretches into a landscape that feels properly removed from the everyday. This Norfolk nature reserve - just east of Eye - is a working wetland where you're likely to see bitterns, marsh harriers and bearded reedlings if you time it right, though honestly the birds decide whether they cooperate or not.

What you get here is a genuine slice of East Anglian wetland rather than a polished visitor attraction. The reserve operates on a seasonal rhythm; spring and early summer bring the most action, when nesting birds are vocal and the water levels are stable. The boardwalk itself keeps you dry and gives proper views across the fen without trampling the habitat. Most people allow an hour or two depending on how serious they are with binoculars.

This works best for birdwatchers and nature types who enjoy patient observation. Kids might find an hour's worth of interest if you point out a few species, but it's not a "things to do" sort of place - it's a sit-and-watch sort of place. The nearest facilities are back in Eye, so come prepared.
