Roxton Park

The River Great Ouse does most of the talking here. Roxton Park is a proper nature reserve just east of St. Neots, and if you're after a quiet walk where you might actually spot something - kingfishers, water voles, the occasional heron - this is the place. The reserve follows the river, so you get those lovely open water views without the crowds of the big country estates.

It's a straightforward walk, nothing demanding. The paths are decent enough, though muddy after rain like everywhere in Cambridgeshire. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to stand still with binoculars. Birdwatchers will absolutely get their money's worth, and families with young kids won't find it tedious - there's enough to look at and the riverside setting keeps things interesting.

The reserve is free to access, which is worth knowing. Spring and early summer are peak times, when the riverside vegetation bursts and you've got decent odds of seeing nesting birds. Winter's quieter but can be atmospheric, the water moving fast after rain.

If you're staying at the nearby St. Neots Camping and Caravanning Club Site - just 3.6 miles away - Roxton Park makes an easy morning out before heading into town itself. It's the sort of place that fills an hour or two between other plans rather than consuming your whole day, but that's rather the point. The Ouse Valley has other reserves worth hitting if you're nature-minded, so piece it together with a broader walk.
