Rowton Brewery

The old Victorian brewhouse at Rowton, just outside Coalbrookdale, is a proper working brewery where you can actually watch beer being made rather than just read about it. The building itself tells you something - solid red brick, Victorian engineering, the kind of place where things got made seriously. You'll see the copper vessels, the fermentation tanks, smell the grain and hops. It's active, genuine, not a museum pretending to be a brewery.

This works best for ale enthusiasts who want to understand how a small independent operation actually functions. You're not getting a slick visitor experience here - it's a working space first, brewery tour second. That's rather refreshing if you know what you're after, but might feel a bit sparse if you're expecting the full theatrical treatment.

We'd allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper look around, though call ahead as opening hours aren't widely advertised on the website. Free or paid entry isn't confirmed either, so check before you go. The Coalbrookdale area is packed with industrial heritage - the Iron Bridge, museums, the Gorge itself - so you could easily spend a weekend here. Irongorge Camping sits just four and a half miles away, giving you a solid base. The brewery works as a nice afternoon stop if you're doing the broader heritage trail, though it's not a major draw on its own. Combine it with the walks and other attractions in the Gorge and it slots in nicely.
