Routin Brig Waterfall

The waterfall tumbles down a rocky gorge just outside Dumfries, and it's worth the short drive from town to see it properly. Routin Brig is nothing fancy - no visitor centre, no café - just water crashing over sandstone in a setting that feels properly wild for the Lowlands. The walk down is steep enough to warrant decent shoes, and you'll need maybe 45 minutes if you poke about and take photos.

It's brilliant for families who don't mind a bit of scrambling. Kids usually love the drama of the drop and the spray if the water's high - though in dry spells it becomes less impressive, admittedly. Serious walkers will find it a decent leg-stretch rather than a full day out. The real appeal is how tucked away it feels compared to the manicured parks around Dumfries. You get that sense of finding something for yourself, which the bigger attractions don't quite deliver.

Free to visit, naturally. Go after rain when the water's got real power behind it - that's when the gorge comes alive. In summer, it's pleasant but less dramatic. If you're staying at Dumfries Riverside Holiday Park, it's practically on your doorstep, making it an easy morning outing before heading to the bigger attractions elsewhere. Allow a couple of hours total if you're not in a rush, and wear waterproof bottoms - the spray reaches further than you'd think.
