Round Wood

A thick belt of woodland tucked between Dorking and the Surrey border, Round Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan to visit. The trees are dense and mature, making it genuinely atmospheric even on grey days - which, let's be honest, is most of the year. There are proper woodland paths threading through, though the canopy hangs so low in places you'll want to watch your head if you're tall.

It's best for walkers who like a bit of peace and quiet rather than manicured trails. The forest floor is soft underfoot and the air smells right - damp earth and rotting leaves, which sounds grim but isn't. Kids won't get bored if they're the type to hunt for woodland creatures and build dens; they'll be miserable if they need benches and information boards. Allow an hour to drift through without rushing.

The real strength here is how close it sits to Dorking town centre, making it an easy detour if you're staying at Sands Farm Weekend Camping just up the road. You could combine it with a walk around town or a proper countryside loop. No facilities that I could find - bring water and sensible shoes. It's free to wander, which helps, and there's something rather British about a wood this ordinary being this good. Rain doesn't spoil it; it improves it.
