Round Tower

There's a stubby stone tower sitting on a slight rise near Stranraer that most people drive past without a second glance. This is the Round Tower, and it's genuinely older than it looks - a 16th-century fortification that once had more strategic importance than its current squat appearance might suggest.

What you're actually standing in front of is a defensive structure built to protect against raids and general Border trouble when things were still a bit rough around these parts. The tower itself is solid, honest stonework - the sort of thing that makes you understand how people actually lived back then, rather than the romantic castle nonsense you get elsewhere. You can see it from the outside, walk around it, get a sense of the landscape it commanded.

Historically minded visitors will find it worthwhile as part of a broader Dumfries & Galloway trail - it slots into the broader picture of how this region was defended and organised. But let's be honest, you're not going to spend three hours here. Twenty minutes is realistic, maybe thirty if you're taking photos or really contemplating things.

It works best combined with a stay at Sands of Luce Holiday Park, just four or so miles away, where you can tick this off as part of a day's exploring without it being the whole point. The landscape around Stranraer is pleasant enough - gentle rather than dramatic - and if you're in the area anyway, the Round Tower makes sense as a quick stop. It's the kind of thing that sticks with you more for what it represents than what you actually see.
