Round Hill

The walk up Round Hill takes you above Lochwinnoch with proper views across Renfrewshire that justify the leg work. It's not a mountain - more a determined hill that rewards you once you're at the top, where you can see across the Lowlands properly on a clear day.

Getting up there takes about 45 minutes from the car park, nothing steep, just steady going through woodland and open moorland. You'll pass the odd forestry track and spot red grouse if you're lucky. The summit itself is modest - a cairn rather than anything dramatic - but the space to sit down and take in the landscape makes the climb worthwhile.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a scramble or anything technically interesting, just solid hill work with a decent payoff. Kids managing the pace won't struggle, though you'll want to judge their stamina - the descent is gentler on the knees than the way up, at least.

Lochwinnoch is the obvious base, sitting right below the hill, and The Pods at Auchenhean five miles out offers decent holiday accommodation if you're planning to stay in the area. Round Hill works well as part of a broader Lowland walking trip rather than a standalone destination, but don't skip it thinking it's too small. The views are the thing here, and on a decent day they're reason enough to get your boots on.
