Round Hill

The walk up Round Hill from Kirkby Stephen is straightforward enough, but the views across the Eden Valley make it worth the leg work. It's not a massive summit - you're only pushing toward 1,400 feet or so - but that's rather the point. You get the sense of real achievement without needing rock climbing experience or a dawn start.

The fell itself is green moorland, the kind of place where you notice the wind changes every few minutes and the light does strange things to the distant hills. On a clear day you can see proper distance. The path is well-trodden and easy to follow, which means families with older kids won't struggle, though younger ones might find the final approach a bit of a slog.

Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're ambling. There's no infrastructure at the top - no café, no toilets - so sort yourself before you leave Kirkby Stephen. The town itself has what you need: a good pub or two, a handful of shops, somewhere to grab lunch.

If you're staying at Gillcumber Glamping Pods just down the road, this becomes an excellent morning or late afternoon outing. It's the sort of walk that fills a few hours without consuming your entire day, leaving room for other stuff - a proper lunch, a drive into the Lake District proper, or simply reading a book back at the pods. Not flashy, but honest fell walking.
