Round Down

The walk up Round Down is short, sharp, and honestly a bit of a leg-burner if you're not prepared for the gradient. This chalk downland peak sits just outside Pewsey and rewards you with proper views across the Vale of Pewsey once you reach the top - the sort of panorama that makes sense of why people bothered climbing a hill in the first place.

It's not a long haul. Most walkers will be up and down in under two hours, which makes it ideal if you're based at Totteridge Farm or Hillview Park nearby and want to stretch your legs without dedicating your entire morning to it. The views are genuine, not oversold - you can see for miles on a clear day, with the Marlborough Downs rolling away in one direction and the Vale opening out in the other.

Families with older kids will manage this fine. Younger ones might find the climb tedious, and the summit itself is fairly exposed, so you'll want decent boots and ideally some wind-resistant kit. There's nothing built up there - no cafe, no facilities - so bring water and a snack.

The real appeal is its accessibility. You don't need to be a serious hillwalker to bag a proper Wiltshire vista. Go midweek in autumn or spring when the downland feels genuinely wild and the crowds are thin. Summer weekends bring more footfall, and honestly, that's when the magic dips a bit.
