Roper Castle or Round Table (Roman Signal Station)

The windswept moorland near Kirkby Stephen holds the remains of what the Romans called a signal station, though locals know it as Roper Castle or Round Table. It's not dramatic stuff - you're looking at a low circular earthwork, maybe 20 metres across, with a shallow ditch. The fort itself sits at 450 metres elevation on Stainmore, one of the bleakest and most exposed routes across the Pennines. The Romans built it to control movement along this crucial supply line, and you can understand why when the wind picks up here.

This is genuinely for history enthusiasts and serious walkers rather than families after a quick afternoon out. There's no visitor centre, no café, not even a car park - you'll need decent navigation and boots. The site itself is free and accessible year-round, though the moorland conditions can be rough, especially in winter. Allow an hour or two to find it properly and walk the perimeter. Spring and autumn are best, when the weather's more forgiving and the views across the fells matter more.

It works well as part of a wider Pennine walking route if you're camping nearby. Gillcumber Glamping Pods is about five and a half miles away, close enough for a proper base. This isn't a standalone destination - it's a waypoint for people who love unpicking Roman Britain on foot and don't mind a bit of effort. The isolation is actually the appeal.
