Romsey Recreation Ground

You'll find yourself in a proper slice of Cambridgeshire wetland just outside Cambridge - flat, open water meadows that feel worlds away from the city despite being barely five miles out. Romsey Recreation Ground is essentially a nature reserve built around old gravel workings, so you get shallow pools, reedy margins, and the kind of birdwatching that actually rewards patience. Bring binoculars and stay quiet; herons, kingfishers, and the occasional osprey put on a show if you're lucky enough to catch them.

The walking is gentle and well-suited to families with older kids - younger ones might lose interest after an hour or so, if I'm honest. There's no dramatic scenery, no bold vistas. What you get instead is the subtle stuff: dragonflies hovering over water, swallows skimming the surface, stands of willows reflected perfectly still. It's the kind of place that grows on you rather than bowls you over immediately.

If you're staying at one of the glamping sites nearby - Lodeside or Fen Meadows - this makes an excellent morning outing before heading back for coffee. Access appears to be free, though it's worth checking locally in Cambridge first since visitor facilities aren't well documented. Best visited during spring and early summer when breeding birds are active and the insect life is properly buzzing. Allow a good two hours if you're genuinely interested in wildlife; half an hour if you just fancy a flat, peaceful walk.
