Rommell's Hill

A modest rise near Alcester that's gained a bit of local interest thanks to its Second World War connection - Rommel's Afrika Korps never actually made it here, but the name stuck after some wartime worry that an invasion might happen. Don't expect a dramatic summit. It's more of a countryside walk that happens to finish somewhere slightly higher than the surrounding Warwickshire farmland.

The appeal is straightforward: a gentle climb with views across rolling fields, the sort of place where you can see for miles on a clear day. Walkers will appreciate it as a short leg on a longer route through the area rather than as a destination in itself. History enthusiasts might find the wartime backstory interesting enough to warrant the detour from Alcester, though there's nothing physical to see up there - no memorial, no markers. Just the hill and the story.

It's free to visit, naturally, and you can tackle it in under an hour if you're just after the summit walk. Spring and early autumn are when it's most pleasant - less muddy underfoot than winter, and the views sharpen up nicely. If you're based at Island Meadow, Wootton Park, or one of the other caravan sites nearby, it's a solid half-morning activity before you move on to something with more teeth - the market town of Alcester itself has actual attractions worth your time.

Worth doing if you're in the area and fancy a straightforward walk. Not worth a special trip from further afield.
