Roman Tile Kiln

Buried in the Surrey countryside just outside Guildford sits the remains of a Roman tile kiln - proper archaeology, not the sort of thing you'll stumble upon by accident. What you're looking at are the actual firing pits and structural remains from around the 1st or 2nd century, when the Romans were supplying tiles to forts and settlements across Britain. Guildford itself is close enough for supplies and lunch. Check locally for access details before heading out, as opening arrangements for archaeological sites can be informal. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of prior reading - come prepared with some knowledge of Roman tile production, and you'll get far more from it than a casual wander.
