Roman Settlement (site of)

The Roman settlement near Malmesbury is essentially a series of archaeological digs and ongoing excavations rather than a visitor attraction with fancy displays or cafes. What you're actually looking at is open ground where archaeologists have uncovered evidence of occupation dating back nearly two thousand years - pottery shards, building foundations, the odd coin. It's the kind of place that rewards patience and a bit of historical imagination.

You won't find much in the way of signage or interpretation boards, which means this works best if you've got a decent knowledge of Roman Britain already, or if you're the sort of person who finds genuine excitement in a field with some rope barriers and a bit of context. History enthusiasts will absolutely get something from it; younger kids might find it underwhelming unless they're genuinely into archaeology. A walk around takes perhaps thirty minutes unless you're really keen.

It's free to visit, which is the main thing in its favour. The real value comes from combining it with other historical sites in the area - Malmesbury itself has the impressive abbey ruins right in town, which makes for a proper afternoon if you're that way inclined. Both Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park and Malmesbury Glamping at Whychurch Farm are within three miles, so you could base yourself at either and pop over between other activities. Just check ahead about access and any ongoing digs before you make the journey.
