Roman Road

The Roman Road cutting through South Lanarkshire is less dramatic than its name suggests, but if you're into archaeology or simply enjoy a good walk with historical weight, it's absolutely worth the detour from Lanark. You're walking on stones laid down nearly two thousand years ago - that alone shifts something in your head. The route itself winds through the Scottish Lowlands countryside, and depending on which section you access, you'll find yourself on proper woodland paths and open moorland stretches where the landscape hasn't changed that much since the legions marched through.

Realistically, this isn't a "sight" in the traditional sense - you won't find visitor facilities or interpretation boards. It's for walkers and history enthusiasts who get a kick out of standing on something ancient. Most people spend two to three hours on a section of it, which pairs nicely with a longer day out in the area. The nearest proper base is Lanark itself, though Ecosse Glamping sits only a few miles away if you fancy something more atmospheric than a standard hotel.

Go in spring or early autumn when the paths aren't waterlogged. Bring a decent map or download the route beforehand - it's easy to lose the thread on less-obvious sections. Kids will be bored senseless unless they're genuinely into Romans, in which case they'll be fascinated by the engineering and the sheer audacity of it all. Don't expect crowds or facilities. That's rather the point.
