Roman Pottery

The Roman kiln site near Tilbury is one of those places that doesn't announce itself loudly, but rewards the curious. What you're looking at are the remains of a pottery production centre that was firing vessels two thousand years ago - actual ovens where Roman potters were working when Britain was still part of the empire.

The site itself is fairly low-key. You'll see archaeological trenches, some exposed kiln structures, and interpretive boards explaining what happened here. It's the sort of place where you need to use your imagination a bit, but that's half the appeal if you're interested in Roman Britain. History types will find it genuinely worthwhile; kids might get bored after twenty minutes unless they're the sort who enjoy poking around ruins.

There's no visitor centre or facilities as far as I can tell, so come prepared. Check opening times and access beforehand - archaeological sites can have restrictions. It's free to visit, which is generous.

Locally, it works well as a half-hour stop rather than a day's focus. You're near Tilbury, and Thamesview Camping is just up the road if you're basing yourself in the area for a longer Essex break. The site sits nicely between Thames-side walks and other Roman sites scattered across the region. It's worth a detour if you're already exploring the lower Thames valley, but probably not worth a special trip on its own.
