Roman Painted House

The Roman Painted House in Dover is one of Britain's best-preserved examples of Roman domestic life, and walking through it feels genuinely like stepping back nearly two thousand years. You're looking at the remains of a substantial townhouse from around 200 AD, complete with vibrant frescoes still clinging to the walls - reds, blues, and ochres that somehow survived centuries underground. The hypocaust system (underfloor heating) is still visible, which gives you a real sense of how the Romans lived here when Dover was a proper port town.

Historically minded visitors will find this absolutely absorbing. The painted plasterwork is the main draw - it's the sort of thing you see in Pompeii but rarely this well preserved on English soil. Most people spend 45 minutes to an hour here, which is about right. Children can get restless unless they're genuinely interested in Romans; the site's fairly small and there's not much interactive about it.

It's free to visit, though admission times vary seasonally so you'll want to check before heading over from Dover town centre.
