Roman Bath House

The remains of a Roman bath house just outside Chester are genuinely arresting if you know what you're looking at. You won't find the grand reconstructions of Pompeii here - this is archaeology in its rawer form, with stone foundations and the ghosted outlines of what were once warm rooms and cold plunges.

Walking around the site gives you an immediate sense of Roman life on the frontier. The hypocaust system - those pillared spaces that heated the floors - is surprisingly legible if you've got even a passing interest in how the occupiers lived. The spatial arrangement tells you something real about Roman comfort and routine in a damp northern outpost.

History buffs will get the most from a visit. Kids might find it a bit abstract unless you're prepared to do some storytelling on the spot. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to sit with the interpretation boards and actually read them. The site isn't exactly a jaw-dropping vista, but it's quiet and contemplative.

It slots neatly into a wider Chester walk - the town's Roman walls and amphitheatre are obvious companions. If you're based at Manor Wood just down the road, this makes for a decent rainy-day detour or a morning out before heading to bigger attractions. Free access, as far as we can tell, though do check ahead as information seems sparse. Go in the shoulder seasons when Chester's less rammed.
