Roke Mead Copse

A proper woodland walk on the Isle of Wight that actually feels removed from the holiday park crowds. Roke Mead Copse is a small but decent patch of mixed woodland just inland from Ryde, the sort of place you'd stumble upon by accident if you weren't careful. The trees are mature - oak and beech mostly - and the ground's usually soft underfoot, which makes for pleasant walking even when the rest of the island's baking.

It's not a destination in itself. This is a thirty-minute wander, maybe forty-five if you're the type to stop and look at things. Families with young kids will manage it fine, though there's nothing here to excite them beyond "there are trees and a bit of mud". Serious walkers won't find it challenging enough to bother with. But if you're camped at Old Mill Holiday Park or Sandhills just up the road - both excellent bases - and you want a break from the beach crowds without driving anywhere, this does the job.

The paths are informal rather than properly maintained, which means you need to watch your footing, especially after rain. There's no car park or facilities - you're parking somewhere nearby and walking in. Free to access, obviously, being woodland. The best time's autumn when the light gets interesting through the canopy, or early spring before the midges emerge. It's the sort of walk you'd do once, tick off, then probably head somewhere better. But that doesn't make it worthless.
