Rodborough Tabernacle URC Church

The red brick chapel sitting on Rodborough Common just outside Stroud stops you in your tracks. It's a proper Victorian United Reformed Church - built in 1869 - and honestly, it's the sort of place that makes you understand why people cared about these buildings. The architecture speaks for itself: solid, unpretentious, utterly assured in what it is.

Inside, the details matter. Wooden pews, a decent organ, the kind of natural light that falls through simple windows without fuss. There's no grandstanding here - just good Nonconformist sensibility from an era when chapel-going meant something to Stroud's working people. You can spend twenty minutes absorbing it or sit longer if the mood takes you. Either way, it won't feel wasted.

This works best for architecture enthusiasts and anyone interested in Victorian religious life, though it's also a peaceful spot if you're walking the common. Stroud itself is ten minutes away, so it's easily combined with a proper day exploring the town's independent shops and cafes. If you're camping at Middle Lypiatt or Tobacconist Farm - both excellent sites just a couple of miles off - the walk up here is worthwhile. The common itself is fine for wandering, though I wouldn't make a whole day of it without heading into town.
