Rockmoor Pond

A shallow, reed-fringed pond just outside Newbury that's genuinely worth a stop if you're walking the local footpaths, though don't expect drama. The water sits quietly among Hampshire's rolling countryside, and on a clear day you'll spot waterfowl - mallards mostly, the odd heron if you're lucky - picking through the shallows.

It's the kind of place that works brilliantly for a quick detour rather than a destination in itself. Bring binoculars and you could spend forty minutes here watching birds; bring kids expecting a splash and they'll be bored within twenty. Dog walkers absolutely love it - there's access to decent footpaths that loop around and beyond the pond, and the ground stays reasonably firm even after rain.

The water's too silty for swimming, and there's no café or facilities to speak of. Free to visit, naturally. Best visited early morning when the light's good and the water's still - late afternoon tends to bring out the midges.

If you're based at Hollington Park Glamping nearby, it makes an easy morning walk before heading elsewhere. On its own, though, it's more of a pleasant pause than a reason to drive across Hampshire. Pair it with a longer ramble through the surrounding countryside and you've got something proper worthwhile.
