Rockcliffe Beach

The beach at Rockcliffe is a proper tidal affair - which means you need to time your visit right or you'll be trudging across mudflats wondering why you bothered. But get it right, and you've got a lovely crescent of sand backed by low cliffs and pretty coastal woodland, just a short drive south of Dalbeattie.

It's the kind of place where families can let kids loose for a couple of hours without much fuss. Rock pools appear at low tide, there's enough sand for the usual bucket-and-spade business, and the walk along the shoreline toward the nearby village of Kippford is gentle enough that even reluctant walkers won't complain. The cliffs themselves are modest - nothing dramatic - but they've got a certain charm, especially when the light's coming in from the west.

Bringing a tide table is non-negotiable. Check before you go, or you'll arrive to find the beach has vanished. Allow two to three hours if you're planning a proper potter. Parking is straightforward, access is free, and there are a couple of reasonable spots to eat in Kippford itself if you fancy something after.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Castle Point is barely half a mile away, and Coastal Kippford even closer - this makes a natural morning or evening outing. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's a solid, unpretentious addition to a Dumfries and Galloway coastal break. Worth the detour if you're in the area, dull if you're driving specifically to see it.
